Chiefs Head Coach Herm Edwards

Opening Statement: “It was a defensive game early and we stubbed our toes when we turned the ball over and you can’t do that against these guys. You go into the game knowing that. They’ve taken the ball away coming into this game 29 times and have scored 94 points. We were fortunate on the one where we held them. But then again, they made some big plays in the passing game. We had the mindset of stopping the running game and we did that fairly well. A couple of the passing plays we screwed up the coverage, to be quite honest.

“They kept the ball in the fourth quarter when they hit the big pass on us, which really gave them momentum. It was a game that was pretty competitive early. Field position was the key but we turned the ball over early too many times. It’s hard to recover when you turn the ball over that many times. We missed a field goal early and when we got a turnover we didn’t do anything with it. All those things hurt when you’re playing a team like this that plays pretty good defense.”

On the decision to punt the ball in the fourth quarter: “Well, I wasn’t going to give them the ball on the 40 at fourth-and-long. I wasn’t going to take a chance at that time. There was still enough time and we got ‘em backed up. It was third-and-long and they got a big play on us. If they punt there we get the ball back and with two possessions we’re in the football game. With 12 minutes and something like that left you’re not going to give them the ball on the 40-yard line. That didn’t make a lot of sense.

“We were playing pretty good defense. We gave them the one big play when we blew the coverage. But other than that, we had held them to field goals until that time. So, I felt if we could slow them down, well, but we gave them a big play and they kept the ball.”

On Trent Green’s day with five sacks and 2 interceptions: “It’s tough when you put him in the known passing downs. That’s why you have to try to be balanced against these guys because they had 42 sacks coming into this game. You don’t want to get back there throwing all the time. The one time I think he may have gotten hit trying to throw the dig route and the ball went high. The one in the Red Zone – I don’t know what happened. He was trying to make a play. That’s what they do. They create turnovers on defense. They’re leading the league. They’ve very good at that. They do the things you have to do to be a good defense.”

On the blown coverage of the 87-yard touchdown: “It was a miscommunication between the safety and the corner. I know what happened. It wasn’t played correctly.”

On Larry Johnson’s day: “It was tough sledding for him and he knew it was going to be a physical game. He made some big runs and that’s him. He played well against a good football team. That’s what you’re good players have to do. But you can’t turn the ball over and allow big pass plays against good teams.”

On what this does for the Chiefs playoff chances: “We just need to win a game at the end of the day. Now we’ve got to win a tough one on the road against a division opponent that’s playing very, very well. My whole mindset was to win a game, even last week it was to win a game. We need to get back to winning a game. If we can’t win games we’re not going to go anywhere. We have to win games and we have to win one of the road now.“

Ravens Head Coach Brian Billick

On today’s victory over Kansas City
“That’s as good of a road win that we’ve ever had given the circumstances; where we’re at, what’s at stake, their record at home in December, so it’s as good of a win as I can remember.”

On the Ravens defensive performance
“Our defense is well-orchestrated; they’ve got a lot of pride and a lot of passion for what they do. They don’t like giving up plays and they’ve shown a propensity to…when you’ve got to stiffen, you stiffen. That’s a good offensive football team at home and they are going to make some plays and to stiffen when you have to is a great sign.”

On QB Steve McNair’s solid performance
“That’s why he’s here. He’s just a champion; always cool, always calm, under control, he’s tough. That’s Steve McNair and that’s why he’s here.”

On the Ravens long fourth quarter drive
“All things considered, that was impressive. The resolve and the ability to run when we had to run and to make the plays in the passing game when you have to in critical situations. . .Credit goes to Steve McNair and a young WR Demetrius Williams making a huge play on the third-and-whatever. He read it perfectly and was right where he needed to be. That says a lot about this team.”

On the success of WR Mark Clayton
“Mark is a gifted athlete and Steve [McNair] is doing a hell of a job getting the ball to him.”
